Cross-curricular Links

Because of the integrated nature of the primary curriculum, links should be made between the language lesson and other curricular areas. The language learning experience should not be viewed in isolation.’

NCCA MLPSI Teacher Guidelines p.35

As far as possible links should be made between what occurs in the language classroom and the programme in other areas of the curriculum. This sends a positive message to the children who are used to subject areas being linked. Linkages result in the language becoming more absorbed into the general curriculum and not being perceived as an unimportant ‘extra’ subject. Although the class teacher who is also the language teacher will be very familiar with the primary curriculum he/she may have to plan more for cross-curricular linking at first. Cross-curricular linking can become more of an instinctive way of thinking and operating the more it is practised. The visiting language teacher should familiarise him/herself with the Primary School Curriculum.

The visiting teacher should talk to the class teacher about the particular syllabus he/she has planned for the year/term and make suggestions as to which areas of the curriculum could be linked into the language curriculum and vice versa. Cooperation and collaboration with the class teacher on cross-curricular planning and teaching will greatly consolidate the position of the language in the general school curriculum and enhance both the children’s knowledge of the language and the associated culture/s.
