Guidelines on Planning

This section provides some guidance on planning for the teaching and learning of a Modern Language at School and Classroom levels.

MLPSI Whole School Planning for the Modern Language

‘The teaching of the language and the benefits accruing from it will be enhanced by a whole-school approach, where the language class is not seen as an ‘extra’ but rather as an integral part of the school curriculum.’

Teacher Guidelines (p. 35) Modern Languages in Primary Schools, NCCA, 1999.

All members of staff have a role to play in developing a whole school approach to the modern language through planning for

- visibility of the language and culture

- communication between all within the school community

- collaboration between teachers

Whole school planning includes planning for the integration of the modern language at the three levels of the curriculum, class events and school events. Templates to facilitate planning and collaboration in these three areas are downloadable below:

MLPSI Classroom Planning for the Modern Language

"It is essential to ensure that the (modern language) programme is planned and ensures logical progression in the language learning process. It is important when planning the programme for the year to ensure that all the functions will be covered throughout the year within the context of the topics. During the second year of language learning the children will revisit these functions and be enabled to fulfill them in a more sophisticated manner".

Section 4, Teacher Guidelines, NCCA Modern Languages in Primary Schools, p.43.
Planning, record keeping and assessment are essential components of a successful implementation of the Modern Language curriculum. Schemes of works are required for the Modern Language as they are for all other subject areas. Besides the integration of stands and strand units, schemes of work should include cross-curricular links. The Modern Language schemes of work prepared by the language teacher are useful tools for collaboration with class teachers. They also serve as a basis for record keeping and assessment.

Different styles of planning templates are available to MLPSI teachers. Teachers are free to choose the templates which best suit them. They can also adapt the format of the templates to suit their own style providing they retain the necessary components.
